ANNE'S COTTAGE Originally
built as a labourer's cottage, TARPENERS was
mentioned in the Winchester Rolls for non payment of
rent in 1447 possibly due to the plague which was
recorded in the area. It has nestled beside
its small country lane for 500 years. The
farmhouse to which it belonged has gone but the
Tudor barn and yard still remain. Now
called ANNE'S COTTAGE after a 19th century occupant, not
the present owner, it has grown but still retains all
the traditional ingredients, oak beams, low ceilings and
open fires, sympathetically combined with modern
comforts. Ann
looks forward to welcoming you, most visitors come more
than once!

ANNE'S
COTTAGE is in a backwater yet close to many travel links. Only one hour
from Heathrow and Gatwick, four miles from A3 and then to junction 10 of M25 or
the coast and ferries at Portsmouth and Southampton. Rail links to London are 6
miles away at Farnham and Haslemere. There are 2000 acres of National
Trust land for walking, cycling and birdwatching. Wisley, the RHS's main
garden is half an hour away and there are several National Trust properties and
golf courses galore.. Ann
came to the cottage in 1999 having run a successful B&B at nearby Vale
House, a large Edwardian home. She has scaled down her Victorian furniture
to suit the smaller rooms and added many curios to add interest to the cosy home
she has created. The half acre garden is a special feature of
the cottage. There is plenty of seating scattered
through its lawns and planted areas enticing you to find
a quiet corner to sit and chat. You
enter by the lounge hall with an inglenook fireplace
which is lit each day in winter. Here you can sit
in the old rocking chair and Holly the labrador is
likely to join you to enjoy the fire. The gallery
also has seating and lovely views across the adjacent
field.
The dining room is the oldest part of the house. With
its mahogany table and family portraits you can enjoy the atmosphere as you
anticipate your home cooked breakfast being prepared in the kitchen next door.

There are three double bedded rooms, two on the ground floor
and all with different characteristics.
The "Toft" is an annex attached to the main house but with
its own front door. It has a double bedroom, an ensuite bathroom
that has a cottage bath and power shower. It also has a sleeping loft,
with reduced headroom and a single divan, very exciting for younger
visitors who enjoy going upstairs to bed. This room is an economical
choice for short stay family groups or for longer stay business visitors working
away from home.
"Chimney Corner"
upstairs has a very low door, three irregular windows
and a French bedstead. Its bathroom across the
hall (shown opposite) is as big as the bedroom and has a large bath with
power shower, wc, bidet and hand basin plus a dressing
table and chair for that important makeup ritual. "Inglenook"
is very quiet, has no beams or low doors but has a large
window overlooking the garden and a modern fitted
bathroom next door. It does not have a shower.
