LINCOLNSHIRE – big sky fens, rolling wolds and sweeping beaches.
Lincolnshire Bed and Breakfast Guide
Across the flat, fertile Fens to the rolling chalk uplands of the Lincolnshire Wolds, with its wooded valleys and sleepy villages. One of them, Somersby, is the birthplace of the poet, Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The triple towers of Lincoln Cathedral are visible for miles. The cathedral is a fascinating mix of Norman and Gothic styles. Look for the Lincoln imp gargoyle, turned to stone by an angel, then explore Lincoln Castle.
Enjoy an Elizabethan extravaganza at Burghley House, home of the world famous horse trials. Climb Hell staircase into Heaven Room. Fulbeck Hall houses the Arnhem Museum, dedicated to the airborne divisions, and Woolsthorpe Manor was the childhood home of Isaac Newton. On to Stamford, which has been described as ‘a miniature Oxford’ with its five spired medieval churches. It also boasts great Georgian architecture.
Lincolnshire’s great gardens include Doddington Hall, featuring formal and wild displays and Easton Walled Gardens, which include kitchen and cottage plots. Spalding is famous for its annual Flower Parade.
To the seaside. Skegness is Lincolnshire’s premier resort. See the seals, and more, at the Natureland Seal Sanctuary. There is also Cleethorpes and Mablethorpe. The renowned Gibraltar Point Nature Reserve leads to The Wash, another wildlife wonderland. King John’s crown jewels are said to have been lost here, in the mud near Sutton Bridge.
